Our story begins with John Haxton, a drayman from Blair Gollary near Dundee, Scotland. When a small inheritance came through during the great immigration wave of the late 19th century, John made plans to go to America, bringing his 16-year-old son Thomas with him. They landed in Boston and moved south to Providence.
Thomas "Papa" Haxton went to work for a jewelry company in Olneyville, where his knack for business quickly got him noticed. When prohibition was lifted in 1934, Tom seized the opportunity and opened the first Haxton's Liquor store in Olneyville, where the people he had helped were loyal to him.
The store was a success, and several of Tom's children followed him into the business. Our Tollgate store became the first "Liquor Super Store" in Rhode Island and one of the first in the country. It remains to this day on Bald Hill Road in Warwick—a family business spanning generations.
